Silicone Materials For Potting And Encapsulating

R-2175 potting an electronic unit

High Wycombe, January 30, 2013 — (http://www.silicone-polymers.co.uk), aUK leader in silicone materials for the medical implants, aerospace, electronics and engineering markets, will officially debut two new silicone products in 2013. NuSil’s Engineering and Electronics business unit has developed LS2-6140, an optically clear primerless encapsulant, and R-2175, a flowable, thermally stable potting compound, as part of concentrated efforts to increase market specialization in the fast-paced industries sectors it serves.

LS2-6140 is a low viscosity, optically clear silicone encapsulant that offers strong adhesion to ceramic and common plastics used for electronic components without the need for primer. This versatile elastomer has a 45 Type A durometer and is optically stable with a refractive index (RI) of 1.40. Ideal for use in High Power and UV LED applications, it can be used to bond or encapsulate optical components that will be exposed to high lumen intensity at elevated temperatures. The low viscosity of LS2-6140 allows for processing by way of spin coating, dispensing, casting or compression molding.

R-2175 is a black, pourable, versatile silicone potting compound adept at providing support for electronics packages such as power supplies, sensors, and AC/DC and DC/DC high efficiency convertors. Its rheology yields a conformal material that works well with complex geometries and its 0.4 W/mK thermal conductivity helps dissipate heat. R-2175 comes in a variety of packaging configurations to ease transition into any manufacturing environment.

LS2-6140 and R-2175 are unique materials designed to support and protect photonic and electronic systems. PST is pushing forward and developing such products for Engineering, Electronics, and Photonics in an expanding silicone technology world, offering to meet the growing needs of these industries. LS2-6140 and R-2175 have been tested per UL 94 and passed V0 and are REACH and ROHS compliant.

SILICONE INK COLORS FOR HEALTHCARE APPLICATIONS

Silicone Inks

Colored inks expand marking options for a range of medical applications.

NUSIL TECHNOLOGY UNVEILS NEW SILICONE INK COLORS FOR HEALTHCARE APPLICATIONS

Carpinteria, California, September 19, 2012 — NuSil Technology, LLC (http://www.nusil.com), the global leader in silicone materials for the healthcare, pharmaceutical and drug delivery industries, announces the launch of new heat-cure colored silicone inks. The newly released colors — red, white, green, bright blue and dark blue — vastly expand the company’s color palette and provide more vibrant, creative marking options.

NuSil’s inks are characterized by a long work time and non-volatile content of approximately 60%. Depending on the ink color, viscosities range from 800 to 3000 cP and can be decreased through dilution via compatible solvent.

The two-part, addition-cure inks can be used in pad-printing and silk-screening processes for marking or coloring silicone rubber parts, such as catheters. Because their cure is accelerated with heat, these inks are suitable for applications requiring a rapid cure time. In fact, the recommended cure schedule is just five minutes at 150°C (302°F).

“With adjustable viscosities and cure schedules allowing for versatility of processing, the inks can be used on a wide variety of medical devices,” said Brian Reilly, Product Director — Healthcare Materials.

This line of silicone inks was a collaborative effort between NuSil Technology for silicone development and C.I. Medical, Inc. (http://www.CIMedical.com) for application feedback. They are designated unrestricted and may be considered for long-term implant applications of 29 days or longer. Each lot undergoes cytotoxicity tests, and a Master Access File will be filed with the FDA for each ink color.

“CI Medical, Inc., with its long term relationship with NuSil, was pleased to be involved with the development of this new series of medical grade silicone inks,” said Bruce Mahan, Engineering Manager – CI Medical, Inc. “The inks’ excellent printability and vibrant opaque colors illustrate the synergy that can be realized when combining the expertise of NuSil with that of CI Medical.”
